Blue Monday – Baloney or brilliant?

The second Monday in January is often discussed in the press as the most depressing day of the year. Supposedly, it’s the day when the Christmas buzz is well and truly gone, grey skies are here and people come to terms with how much was spent at Christmas.
In the years since this phenomenon was first reported, the collective press has gone out of it’s way to tear the scientific evidence behind it to shreds. The truth remains however that this time of year can be downright miserable! So here at the nest, we thought we’d share a very very positive Blue Monday.

Damn right it’s actually a cocktail!

Blue Monday

blue monday

1.5 ounces vodka
1/2 ounce Cointreau or Triple Sec
1/4 ounce Blue Curacao
Shake with ice, strain into a martini glass. You can garnish it with an orange wheel or peel for color contrast, and to signal visually that the flavor of the drink will mainly be orange.

Motivation – What is yours?

This week’s blog is written by Skylark’s leader, Claire White, who shares her inspirational perspective on motivation.

What is your motivation?
Motivation is, by definition:
(Noun) the psychological feature that arouses an organism to action toward a desired goal; the reason for the action; that which gives purpose and direction to behaviour
“We did not understand his motivation”; “he acted with the best of motives”
(Noun) the condition of being motivated
“His motivation was at a high level
(Noun) the act of motivating; providing incentive

The end goal of motivation is success.

Success, by definition is; success
(Noun) an event that accomplishes its intended purpose
“Let’s call heads a success and tails a failure”; “the election was a remarkable success for the Whigs”
(Noun) an attainment that is successful
“His success in the marathon was unexpected”; “his new play was a great success”
(Noun) a state of prosperity or fame
“He is enjoying great success”; “he does not consider wealth synonymous with success”

You are motivated to become successful.
People have different views of success, it could be the need to be popular, the want to be powerful, or it could be the necessity to be wealthy. MY motivation is success, to not be selfishly successful, but to be successful for others. If I am successful my family will be successful, my friends will be successful and those around me will be successful.
Success can also be a bad thing, sometimes motivation is greed. Greed is an ugly motivation it lends itself to lies, corruption, selfishness and eventually self-deprecation. These are not indications of success. Some people get so wrapped up in success they forget what their motivation was in the first place. Evaluate yourself, see what your motivation is and if it isn’t beneficial, change your view. It may not sound that simple, but it is, life is full of choices and this is yours!
I aim to motivate those around me, my motivation is the success of others. I have been granted the tools for success in my life and sharing that is a very important motivation for me.
My motivation lies within the solution for others. If somebody comes to me with a problem, that is my motivation, the success for me would be to find the solution. Every problem has a solution and it is my aim to find it.
What is your motivation? Yourself? Or somebody else? Either is completely wonderful, be motivated, as long as it is positive it will be useful. We have recently been discussing the point that decisions are much better than resolutions. Perhaps you are motivated to work your way up the career ladder. Would you like to own your first home? Is it simply spending less time watching television and more time reading? Do it! Or perhaps your business is your motivation, to make it the best place for your employees to work, your children, providing a good stable home and values for your child. Or your parents, repaying them for all that they have done for you. Do it!
These are your motivations, your successes are CEO at whatever business you’re working for, 01 Bloggs Avenue with your name on the deed and the moment switch off the television and open the book you’ve been looking forward to reading. Your employees recommend you to their friends as an excellent place to work, success! Your children say please and thank you or give you a massive cuddle just because they love you, success! Or you can go to your parents and say thank you or help them out when they are in trouble, success! Motivation comes in many forms, what is yours? Decide to find and use your motivation.
